‘Restaurant’ là một chủ đề quen thuộc nhưng không kém phần thử thách trong IELTS Speaking. Để giúp bạn tự tin chinh phục topic này, hãy cùng cô Mỹ Ly và trung tâm ngoại ngữ ECE đến với gợi ý trả lời, bài mẫu chi tiết cho cả 3 phần thi và những từ vựng “ăn điểm” bạn không nên bỏ qua.
Part 1: Introduction & Interview

Topic Restaurant IELTS Speaking: Chia sẻ từ cô Mỹ Ly
1. How often do you eat out in a restaurant?
“To be honest, I hardly ever chow down in an eatery. It’s not really a regular habit for me. My main concern is that frequent eating out might pose health risks. Restaurant meals, while often delicious, can be high in fats, calories, and sodium, and you don’t always know exactly what ingredients are used. I prefer cooking at home where I have full control over what goes into my food. That being said, I do enjoy eating out occasionally for special events or when I want to try something new.”
- Vocab highlight:
- Chow down: ăn (thường là ăn một cách nhiệt tình, vui vẻ)
- Eatery: nhà hàng, quán ăn (từ đồng nghĩa với restaurant)
- Health risks: rủi ro sức khỏe
2. What type of restaurants do you like best?
“Well, many people seem to gravitate towards the fine dining experience, especially for significant occasions like birthdays or anniversaries. I understand the appeal – they place much emphasis on meticulous service, exquisite food presentation, and an upscale ambiance. However, personally, I find myself favoring casual dining spots and even sometimes fast-food establishments. I appreciate the relaxed atmosphere, the diverse menu options that usually cater to different tastes, and the fact that the food is typically moderately priced. It feels more comfortable and less formal.”
- Vocab highlight:
- Fine dining experience: trải nghiệm ẩm thực cao cấp
- Place much emphasis on: chú trọng nhiều vào
- Upscale ambiance: không gian sang trọng
- Casual dining: ăn uống bình dân
- Fast-food establishments: nhà hàng phục vụ đồ ăn nhanh
3. What type of restaurants are popular in your country?
“Vietnam is world-renowned for its vibrant street food scene. Street food stalls are incredibly popular everywhere, from bustling cities to smaller towns. People love them because you can tuck into an amazing variety of delicious and remarkably affordable dishes – think Phở, Bánh Mì, Bún Chả, and so on. Besides street food, other prominent restaurant types include traditional Vietnamese eateries, often family-run, serving authentic regional specialties. And, of course, international fast-food chains like KFC or McDonald’s have also gained significant popularity, especially among the younger generation.”
- Vocab highlight:
- Street food stalls: quầy hàng/cơ sở thức ăn đường phố
- Tuck in: thưởng thức (ăn một cách ngon lành)
- Prominent: nổi bật, đáng chú ý
- Fast-food chains: chuỗi cửa hàng đồ ăn nhanh
4. How do you think restaurants have changed over the past few years?
“Oh, the restaurant industry has definitely undergone some tremendous changes, largely driven by technological advances. One major shift is the adoption of digital tools. Many restaurants now feature digital menus accessible via QR codes, and online ordering and reservation systems have become commonplace. This makes the whole process of booking a table or getting food delivered much more convenient for customers. Also, I’ve noticed a greater emphasis on hygiene and perhaps more diverse international cuisine options becoming available even in smaller cities.”
- Vocab highlight:
- The restaurant industry: ngành kinh doanh nhà hàng
- Tremendous changes: những thay đổi to lớn
- Digital menu: thực đơn điện tử

5. What are the advantages of eating out in restaurants?
“Eating out certainly has its advantages. Firstly, it’s incredibly convenient, especially for people who are often up to their ears in work or other commitments. You save a significant amount of time and effort related to meal planning, grocery shopping, cooking, and, not to mention, the washing up afterwards! Secondly, restaurants offer fantastic opportunities for new culinary experiences. It’s a chance to explore different cuisines, flavors, and food cultures that you might not be able to replicate at home. Lastly, it’s also a great social activity, providing a venue to connect with friends and family.”

Part 2: Cue Card
Describe a restaurant you enjoyed going to.
You should say:
- where the restaurant was
- who you went with
- what type of food you ate in this restaurant
- and explain why you thought the restaurant was good
“Okay, I’d like to talk about one of my absolute go-to spots whenever I feel like dining out, especially for a nice treat. It’s a restaurant called “Al Fresco’s”.
Regarding its location, it’s conveniently situated just a stone’s throw from my house, which is a big plus. More specifically, it boasts a wonderful location overlooking West Lake in Hanoi, offering not just incredible food but also a stunning panoramic view, which is particularly lovely around sunset.
I usually go there with my near and dear – my family or close friends. We tend to reserve it for special occasions like birthdays or family celebrations, as it feels a bit more special than our everyday meals.
Al Fresco’s positions itself as a casual dining restaurant, but with a slightly upscale feel. Their menu is quite diverse, featuring a mix of Western and Asian cuisines. However, they are particularly famous for their Western dishes. Their signature dishes, like the BBQ pork ribs and Australian steaks, are absolutely fantastic – consistently juicy, tender, and bursting with flavor. It would be no exaggeration to say that every dish seems to be plated to perfection. It’s not just a treat for the taste buds, but also a feast for the eyes. They also have great pizzas, pastas, and salads, so there’s something for everyone.
There are several reasons why I think this restaurant is so good. Firstly, beyond the delicious food, what really sets the restaurant apart is its ambiance and setting. The combination of warm lighting, comfortable seating, and elegant yet relaxed décor makes the establishment stand out from its competitors. It creates a unique and memorable dining experience – it’s the kind of place where you could comfortably dress to the nines for a celebration or just pop in wearing something casual for a quiet evening with buddies.
Another crucial factor is the service. The staff there are incredibly attentive, polite, and professional. They always make you feel like a valued guest, anticipating your needs without being intrusive. The service is genuinely second to none.
So, in a nutshell, Al Fresco’s really ticks all the right boxes for me: great location, delicious and well-presented food, a wonderful atmosphere, and impeccable service. It’s a place I genuinely enjoy visiting and would highly recommend to others looking for a quality dining experience in Hanoi.”

Part 3: Discussion
1. Why do you think people go to restaurants when they want to celebrate something?
“I believe people opt for restaurants for celebrations for a couple of key reasons. Firstly, there’s the convenience factor. Organizing a celebration at home involves a lot of planning, cooking, and especially cleaning up afterwards. Eating out eliminates all that stress, allowing everyone, including the host, to fully enjoy the occasion. It becomes a real treat and a chance to truly kick back and relax. Secondly, restaurants often provide a special ambiance that can significantly enhance the festive mood. Elements like specific lighting, background music, tasteful décor, and even the general buzz of other diners contribute to a sense of occasion that’s hard to replicate at home. It makes the celebration feel more distinct and memorable.”
- Vocab highlight:
- opt for: lựa chọn
- a real treat: một dịp/trải nghiệm thực sự thú vị, đáng tận hưởng
- kick back and relax: nghỉ ngơi thư giãn
- the festive mood: không khí/tâm trạng lễ hội, vui tươi
2. Do you think bigger restaurants tend to be better than small ones?
“Not necessarily, I don’t think size is the definitive factor for quality. Big eateries certainly have advantages – they often boast larger physical spaces, potentially more varied menus, and the capacity to cater to large groups or events effectively. However, ‘better’ is subjective. Sometimes, larger restaurants can feel impersonal or noisy. On the other hand, small restaurants often manage to punch above their weight. They might focus more intensely on food quality, offer unique or specialized cuisine, and provide highly personalized service where the staff or even the owner might remember regular customers. So, it really depends on the specific restaurant and what the diner values most in their experience – space and variety, or perhaps intimacy and specialized quality.”
- Vocab highlight:
- Not necessarily: không hẳn là như vậy
- cater: phục vụ, đáp ứng nhu cầu
- punch above their weight: làm tốt hơn mong đợi, thể hiện vượt trội so với tầm vóc/quy mô
- personalized service: dịch vụ được cá nhân hóa (chăm sóc khách hàng kỹ lưỡng, riêng biệt)
3. Do people in your country socialize in restaurants? Why?
“Yes, absolutely. Restaurants have become a very popular venue to socialize in Vietnam. People from all walks of life – students, families, colleagues, friends – frequently meet up at eateries. These occasions range from casual hangouts and catch-ups to more formal business meetings, romantic dates, or family gatherings. I think the main reason is that restaurants provide a neutral, comfortable, and convenient environment. Individuals can relax, engage in meaningful conversations, and enjoy a shared experience over food and drinks without the hassle of preparing meals or cleaning up at home. It removes the burden of hosting and allows everyone to focus on interacting with each other.”
- Vocab highlight:
- venue: địa điểm (tổ chức sự kiện, gặp gỡ)
- all walks of life: mọi tầng lớp xã hội
- hassle: sự phiền phức, rắc rối
4. Do people in your country value food culture?
“Absolutely, Vietnamese people place an incredibly high value on food culture. It’s deeply ingrained in our society. Food provides more than just nourishment; it’s seen as a fundamental part of our national identity, reflecting centuries of history, traditions, regional diversity, beliefs, and social values. Family recipes and specific table manners are often passed down through generations, serving as a tangible link to our heritage and cultural identity. For instance, the custom of inviting elders or guests to eat first (Mời ông/bà/anh/chị... xơi cơm
) before starting your own meal is a common practice showing politeness and respect. Food is central to almost all social gatherings, festivals, and family events.”
- Vocab highlight:
- Absolutely: Chắc chắn rồi, tất nhiên rồi
- nourishment: dinh dưỡng, sự nuôi dưỡng
- table manners: quy tắc/văn hóa ứng xử trên bàn ăn
- tangible link: mối liên kết hữu hình, cụ thể
5. How do you think the way we eat will change in the future?
“That’s an interesting question. I suppose the way we eat will likely undergo significant changes in the future, driven by several factors. Firstly, I anticipate a growing emphasis on health and sustainability. People are becoming increasingly conscious of the health implications of their diets and the environmental impact of food production. Consequently, there’s a strong likelihood that we’ll see reduced meat consumption and a greater adoption of plant-based alternatives. Secondly, technology will play an even bigger role. We might see wider use of AI-powered apps creating highly customized meal plans based on individual health data and goals. Perhaps we’ll also see advancements in food production, like lab-grown meat becoming more mainstream, or enhanced traceability allowing consumers to know exactly where their food comes from.”
- Vocab highlight:
