Mối quan hệ hay “Relationships” là một trong những chủ đề thường xuyên xuất hiện trong bài thi kỹ năng nói của IELTS. Khi miêu tả về chất lượng của một mối quan hệ, các bạn có thể dùng các từ sau:

trust – sự tin tưởng

loyalty – lòng trung thành

support – sự hỗ trợ

understanding – sự thấu hiểu

respect – sự tôn trọng

commitment – sự cam kết

empathy – sự đồng cảm

Các tính từ thường dùng để mô tả mối quan hệ:

close-knit – gắn bó

supportive – luôn ủng hộ

meaningful – ý nghĩa

long-lasting – bền vững

complicated – phức tạp

distant – xa cách

harmonious – hòa hợp

strained – căng thẳng

Một số cụm động từ và cấu trúc hữu ích:

fall out with someone – cãi nhau với ai đó

Do you have many friends?

Yes, I do. I have quite a lot of friends, but not many of them are really close. I’m quite cautious when it comes to trusting others enough to share my private and personal stories.

Who are you closest to in your family?

I would say it is my mom. She is the person I turn to in times of problems or in making important decisions. She is always there to help me with advice and comfort me with her words and actions.

Do you prefer spending time with friends or family?

To be honest, it depends on the situation. If I’m in the mood to just chill out and have a good time, I would choose my friends. However, if I’m in need of comfort or support, I would choose my family because I know that they understand me better.

Describe a person you have a very good relationship with.

You should say:

• who the person is
• how you met this person
• what you usually do together
• and explain why you have a good relationship with this person
  

Sample answer:

I would like to talk about my best friend – Lam, who I have known for over ten years.

I met her in secondary school when we saw each other on the first day of school. We were both assigned to sit next to each other in class. At that time, I still remember she broke the ice between us by asking me a question about the recruitment requirements of one of our school clubs. We ended up chatting a lot about various topics. 

From that time onwards, I realized that I had many common interests with her, and we both had similar personalities. We then spent almost all of our time together in the school years, which have now become my life-time unforgettable memories. We used to ride to school, have lunch, and chat a lot. Now, we can’t afford ourselves that much time, but we still try to keep in touch through messages or phone calls.

What makes our friendship so special for me is the trust and respect we have put in the relationship. We have no secret; we always try to take good care of each other, and we never allow ourselves to take this love and care for granted. I know for sure that no matter what happens, I’ll always receive the willing support from her, and I would definitely do the same if she is in need. Because of that, I believe our friendship is going to last for a long time.

Why are relationships important for people?

Personally, I think relationships are important for people because humans are social creatures. We need to communicate and work with others as a whole, so that proves the importance of relationships as it gives us emotional support, relieves us from stress, and increases our happiness and feelings of belonging.

Do you think friendships are different now compared to the past?

Yes, I think so, at least to some extent. In the past, people became friends through direct interactions, and they kept in touch through letters that took quite a long time. Today, technology has helped us become friends even at long distances, and make staying in touch more convenient, but some people think that these kinds of friendships are not strong enough.

What qualities are important in a good relationship?

Trust, respect, and communication are the most important qualities for good relationships. Without trust, suspicion develops; without respect, we cannot appreciate the differences between ourselves and others; and without communication, we cannot solve problems properly.
