Question 1: Do you often read local news?

Sample: Yes, although I wouldn’t say I actively follow it every day. I usually come across a news story when I’m scrolling through social media or checking an online newspaper. I’m especially interested in traffic updates and changes in my city because they can have a direct impact on my daily life.

Question 2: Where do you usually get local news?

Sample: Mostly from social media and online news sites. They’re convenient because I can get real-time updates without having to sit down and watch a full news programme. That said, if a story seems important, I usually double-check information on a reputable news source before believing or sharing it.

Question 3: What kind of local news are you interested in?

Sample: I’m mainly interested in traffic, weather, and local events. Traffic updates are useful because they can help me avoid congested roads, while information about festivals or public events gives me ideas about what to do at the weekend. I also pay attention to major changes in public services or infrastructure.

Question 4: Do you think local news is important?

Sample: Definitely. Local news helps people stay informed about what is happening in their own area, from road closures to community events and weather warnings. Some stories may never make the headlines nationally, but they can still affect residents directly. I also think local news helps people feel more connected to their community.

Đề bài: Describe a piece of local news that you found interesting.

You should say:

• What the news was

• Where you heard or read about it

• What happened

• And explain why you found it interesting.

Sample Answer:

I’d like to talk about a piece of local news about the opening of a new metro line in Hanoi. It attracted a lot of attention because traffic congestion has been a major problem in the city for years.

I first came across the story on social media when one of my friends shared a post about the official opening. After that, I read a couple of online news articles to get more details because I wanted to know which areas the line connected and how much the tickets would cost.

Basically, the new metro line was opened to the public after several years of construction. It connected some busy residential areas with other parts of the city, giving commuters another option besides cars, motorbikes, and buses. During the first few days, lots of people went there just to experience the new service, so photos and videos of the trains spread quickly on social media. Local news sites also covered people’s reactions and provided information about operating hours and ticket prices.

I found the story interesting mainly because it could have a direct impact on people’s daily lives. During rush hour, many roads in Hanoi can become extremely congested, and commuters sometimes spend a long time stuck in traffic. A reliable public transport system could help reduce that problem and make travelling around the city more convenient. I also liked the fact that it was a positive local story. News can often focus on accidents or other problems, so it was nice to hear about a development that might actually improve the city. I’d definitely like to use the metro more often if the routes fit into my daily schedule.

Question 1: Why is local news important?

Sample: I think there are two main reasons. First, local news provides practical information that can affect people’s daily lives, such as traffic updates, weather warnings, road closures, or changes to public services. For example, knowing that a major road is closed can help commuters choose another route and save time. Second, it can raise awareness of community issues and encourage residents to pay more attention to what is happening around them.

Question 2: How has social media changed the way people receive local news?

Sample: The biggest change is probably the speed at which information spreads. In the past, people mainly relied on newspapers or television, whereas nowadays a local event can appear on social media within minutes. This means residents can get real-time updates, which is particularly useful during emergencies or traffic problems. However, the downside is that misleading information can spread just as quickly, so people need to double-check what they read.

Question 3: Do you think local newspapers will disappear in the future?

Sample: I don’t think local journalism will disappear, but printed newspapers may become much less common. Younger people already prefer getting news from websites, apps, and social media because these platforms are faster and easier to access. Local news organisations will probably have to focus more on digital content in order to reach a wider audience. However, there will still be a need for reliable journalists to cover community issues that larger national news organisations may ignore.
