Bài mẫu IELTS Speaking Part 2
Đề bài (Cue Card): Describe a person who has made a contribution to their community / brought positive changes to your community. You should say:
-
who this person is
-
how you know this person
-
what they have done for the community
-
and explain why you think their contribution is important.
Sample Answer:
I’d like to talk about a retired teacher who lives in my neighbourhood. I’ve known her since I was a child, because she used to teach at my primary school, and she still lives just a few streets away from my family. She’s in her sixties now, but she’s one of the most energetic people I know.
What makes her special is that she has never stopped giving back to the community, even after retiring. A few years ago, she noticed that many children in our area had nowhere to study after school because their parents worked long hours and their homes were quite crowded. Instead of just complaining about it, she took the initiative and turned the ground floor of her house into a free reading and study room. Every afternoon, she helps the kids with their homework, and at weekends she runs reading sessions. She also persuaded some local families and university students to donate books and volunteer their time, so now it’s become a small grassroots initiative rather than a one-person project.
I actually volunteered there a couple of times during my summer holidays, and I was impressed by how well she managed everything. She didn’t just teach the children; she also encouraged the older kids to help the younger ones, which gave them a real sense of responsibility.
I think her contribution is important because it has a lasting impact. Those children now have a safe place to go and someone who believes in them, which can make a huge difference to their confidence and future. She has also brought people together, because neighbours who barely knew each other now cooperate to support the room. What I’ve learned from her is that making a positive difference doesn’t require money or power; it starts with noticing a problem and being willing to do something about it.
Question 1: Why do some people choose to do voluntary work?
Sample: I think there are several motivations. For many people, it’s simply about wanting to lend a helping hand to those in need, especially if they have experienced difficulties themselves. Others volunteer because it gives them a sense of purpose and satisfaction that their regular job may not provide. There are also practical reasons; for example, young people often volunteer to gain experience, develop skills, or make their CV more attractive. In my view, the motivation doesn’t matter too much, as long as the work genuinely benefits the community.
Question 2: Should students be required to do community service at school?
Sample: I think it’s a good idea in principle, but it should be organised carefully. Community service can teach young people civic responsibility and help them understand the problems other people face, which they might never see otherwise. However, if it becomes just another compulsory task, students may do it reluctantly and learn very little. So rather than forcing a fixed number of hours, schools could offer a range of projects and let students choose something they actually care about. That way, they are more likely to stay involved even after they leave school.
Question 3: Who should be responsible for helping people in need: the government or individuals?
Sample: I’d say it should be a shared responsibility. The government has the resources and authority to deal with large-scale problems such as poverty, healthcare, or housing, so it should play the main role. However, governments can be slow and may not notice smaller, local needs. That’s where individuals and community groups come in, because they understand their neighbourhood better and can respond more quickly. Ideally, the two should work together rather than one relying entirely on the other.
Question 4: How has technology changed the way people help their communities?
Sample: Technology has made it much easier to get involved. Social media allows people to raise awareness of an issue and raise money for a good cause in just a few days, which would have been almost impossible in the past. There are also apps and websites that connect volunteers with organisations that need help. On the downside, some people think that sharing a post or clicking “like” is enough, without taking any real action. So while technology is a powerful tool, it can’t completely replace face-to-face involvement.
Question 5: Do you think big companies have a responsibility to contribute to society?
Sample: Yes, I believe they do. Large companies benefit from the communities they operate in, including their workers, customers, and infrastructure, so it’s fair that they give something back. This could mean funding education programmes, reducing their environmental impact, or encouraging employees to volunteer. That said, some companies use charity mainly as a marketing strategy to improve their image. I think what really matters is whether their contribution is consistent and genuine, rather than a one-off campaign designed for publicity.
