Many of them even make an effort to master basic colloquialisms, which always brings a warm smile to Vietnamese people’s faces because it shows their genuine appreciation for our culture.”

I’d like to talk about Dustin Cheverier, an American content creator who has captured the hearts of millions of Vietnamese viewers through his engaging lifestyle and travel vlogs.

As far as I know, he moved to Vietnam around 2014, meaning he has spent over a decade immersing himself in the local culture. When he first started, like many other expats, he undoubtedly struggled with the complex system of tones and regional accents. However, through continuous, on-the-ground interaction and living closely with local communities, he has managed to master a tonal language that many foreigners find extremely daunting.

What strikes me the most is not just his conversational skills, but his ability to use local slang, joke around naturally with street vendors, and connect effortlessly with folks in rural areas. His linguistic competence feels entirely organic rather than textbook-driven.

Locals tend to be much more warm, open, and protective of someone who makes an effort to speak their language. Consequently, it allows expats to build deeper relationships, access hidden cultural gems, and truly feel like a valued part of the community rather than just an outsider looking in.”
