IELTS Speaking Part 1 Sample

Question 1: Do you like looking at yourself in the mirror?

Yes, I do, although I wouldn’t say I’m obsessed with my appearance. I usually take a quick look in the mirror before I leave home to make sure my hair and clothes look presentable. It’s more of a practical habit than anything else.

  • obsessed with = overly preoccupied with

  • appearance = how one looks

  • presentable = neat and tidy

  • practical habit = a habit based on utility

Question 2: Would you use mirrors to decorate your room?

Definitely. I think mirrors can be a really effective part of home décor, especially in a small room. They can reflect natural light and make the space feel more spacious. Personally, I’d probably choose a simple full-length mirror with a wooden frame because it would look both practical and stylish.

  • home décor = interior decoration

  • reflect natural light = bounce light around a room

  • make the space feel more spacious = create an illusion of more room

  • full-length mirror = a tall mirror

  • wooden frame = a frame made of wood

Question 3: Do you usually take a mirror with you?

Not usually. I don’t really see the need to carry a mirror around because I can normally find one in a restroom or a shop. That said, I might take a compact mirror with me if I’m going somewhere special, such as a wedding or a formal event.

  • see the need to = find it necessary to

  • carry something around = keep something with you

  • compact mirror = a small, portable mirror

  • formal event = a serious or special occasion

  • Structure: Not usually. + reason + That said, + exception

Question 4: Have you ever bought a mirror?

Yes, quite a few times. The last one I bought was a full-length mirror for my bedroom. I chose it mainly because I wanted something that was functional but also fitted in with the overall style of the room. It’s now one of the most useful pieces of furniture I have.

  • full-length mirror = a tall mirror

  • functional = practical

  • fit in with = match or complement

  • overall style = general aesthetic

  • piece of furniture = an item of furniture

IELTS Speaking Part 2 Sample

Describe a mirror that you like using.

You should say:

  • where it is

  • what it looks like

  • when you use it

  • and explain why you like using it.

Sample Answer:

I’d like to talk about a full-length mirror that I have in my bedroom. I’ve had it for around two years, and although it’s a fairly ordinary household item, I’ve actually grown quite attached to it.

It’s positioned next to my wardrobe, so it’s probably one of the first things I see when I get up in the morning. It’s quite tall and rectangular, with a simple wooden frame. What I particularly like about it is its minimalist design. It doesn’t take up much space, but it makes the room feel brighter and more spacious because it reflects quite a lot of natural light.

I mainly use it when I’m getting ready to go somewhere. For example, I’ll stand in front of it to check whether my clothes go well together and whether I look presentable before leaving the house. I sometimes use it before an important occasion as well, just to make sure everything is in place.

The main reason I like this mirror is that it’s both practical and aesthetically pleasing. More importantly, it has become part of my daily routine. Whenever I see my reflection before going out, it gives me a sense that I’m properly prepared for the day. So, although it’s just a mirror, I’d definitely miss it if I didn’t have it.

Vocabulary Highlight:

  • full-length mirror: a tall mirror

  • grown attached to: become fond of

  • household item: an object used in the home

  • feel brighter and more spacious: appear lighter and larger

  • go well together: match or coordinate

  • presentable: neat and tidy

  • practical and aesthetically pleasing: useful and good-looking

  • part of my daily routine: a regular habit

  • properly prepared: fully ready

IELTS Speaking Part 3 Sample

Question 1: Why do you think mirrors are important in our daily lives?

I think mirrors serve both practical and psychological purposes. On a practical level, people use them to check their appearance, get ready for work or school, and make sure their clothes and hair are presentable. On a psychological level, looking at ourselves can influence our self-image and confidence. So, although a mirror is a fairly simple object, it can actually play quite an important role in our everyday lives.

  • serve a purpose = have a function

  • practical purpose = a functional use

  • psychological purpose = an effect on the mind

  • self-image = how one views oneself

  • presentable = neat

  • everyday lives = daily life

Question 2: Do you think mirrors can affect the way people see themselves?

Yes, to some extent. The way people perceive their reflection can influence their self-esteem, particularly if they constantly compare their appearance with unrealistic images in the media. Social media can make this problem even more noticeable because people are exposed to heavily edited photographs on a daily basis. That said, I think a person’s self-image is shaped by many factors, so mirrors themselves aren’t necessarily the main cause.

  • to some extent = partially

  • perceive = view or interpret

  • self-esteem = self-worth

  • compare A with B = measure A against B

  • unrealistic images = idealized, fake images

  • be exposed to = encounter

  • heavily edited photographs = photos altered significantly

  • self-image = self-perception
