This is a frequently appearing topic in Part 1, and it often spills over into Parts 2 and 3 with broader questions about culture, traditions, and community. While it might sound straightforward, it’s easy for candidates to get “stuck” if they lack the specific vocabulary to describe the atmosphere and activities, or if they don’t have enough personal experience to share a story naturally.

This article will provide you with a comprehensive toolkit to handle this topic, including high-scoring vocabulary, effective sentence structures, and detailed sample answers for all three parts. Let’s get started!

Part 1: High-scoring Vocabulary and Structures for Festivals

To keep your speaking from sounding monotonous with basic words like “happy” or “fun,” equip yourself with the vocabulary and structures below.

Question 2: What festivals are popular in your country?

Answer:

Vietnam has tons of festivals throughout the year. The most popular one is definitely Tet, our Lunar New Year. Besides that, people also enjoy the Mid-Autumn Festival, the Hung Kings’ Festival, and even local events like flower festivals or lantern festivals. Each one has its own charm and cultural story.

Question 3: Do you prefer traditional festivals or modern celebrations?

Answer:

I’d say I prefer traditional festivals because they carry historical significance and remind people of their roots. Modern celebrations are fun too, but they’re more about entertainment. Traditional festivals, on the other hand, allow us to reconnect with our culture and family values.

PART 2

You have 1 minute to prepare and 2 minutes to speak.

Topic: Describe a festival you enjoyed.

You should say:

• What it was

• When it took place

• What people did

• And explain why you enjoyed it

Sample Answer:

One festival that really stands out in my memory is the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is celebrated every year around September. I’ve enjoyed it ever since I was a kid, but last year’s celebration was particularly special to me.

On that day, the streets were filled with colorful lanterns, lion dances, and stalls selling mooncakes of every flavor. Children walked around carrying star-shaped lanterns, while adults gathered to enjoy tea and traditional snacks. There was also a small parade in my neighborhood, where performers played drums and danced to folk music.

What made this festival so meaningful to me was the sense of community it created. Everyone—kids, parents, and even the elderly—came together to celebrate. I also loved the nostalgic feeling it brought back, reminding me of my childhood when I used to make lanterns with my cousins. It’s a festival that blends joy, tradition, and beautiful memories in the most perfect way.

PART 3

In this part, expand your answers by providing social analysis, comparisons, or predictions.

Question 1: Why do you think festivals are important in a society?

Answer:

Festivals are essential because they strengthen cultural identity and bring communities together. They remind people of their shared history, traditions, and values. Besides, festivals give individuals a break from their busy lives and allow them to celebrate moments of joy with others.

Question 2: How have festivals changed compared to the past?

Answer:

Festivals nowadays have become much more commercialized and entertainment-focused. In the past, they were simpler and centered around religious or cultural rituals. While modern festivals attract bigger crowds and offer more activities, I feel that sometimes the traditional values get overshadowed by marketing and business.

Question 3: Do you think festivals will continue to be popular in the future?

Answer:

Absolutely. Even with all the changes in society, people still crave connection and meaning. Festivals offer both. I believe they will continue to evolve, combining traditional elements with new forms of celebration. As long as people value culture and community, festivals will always remain an important part of life.

Conclusion & Scoring Strategy

The Festival topic might sound simple, but to achieve a high band score, you need to go beyond just “describing an event.”

Core strategies:

1. Use vocabulary that describes feelings and atmosphere: Instead of just saying “what I did,” describe “what the atmosphere was like” (vibrant, lively, colorful) and “how you felt” (nostalgic, connected, overjoyed).

2. Connect to cultural values (especially in Part 3): Discuss the role of festivals in fostering community bonding, preserving cultural identity, or the impact of commercialization in modern times.

3. Tell your story naturally: Choose a festival you genuinely enjoy and have memories of. Authentic emotion will make your speaking much more fluid and persuasive.
