ECE offers 3 levels of summer writing courses, tailored to each student’s proficiency and goals:

1. Writing Summer Intermediate (WRSI)

Target Audience: This course is for intermediate students who have a basic grasp of grammar and are starting to practice writing paragraphs and essays.
Learning Outcomes: Students will master basic grammar and writing techniques, gaining the ability to write coherent and clear paragraphs and simple essays. Expected level: equivalent to IELTS 4.5 – 5.5. Covers 3 common argumentative essay types.
Course Content:
- Introduction to 17 essential introductory vocabulary topics.
- Mastery of 15 fundamental grammar categories essential for Academic Writing.
- Focus on writing coherent academic paragraphs: clear topic sentences, logical idea development, and appropriate conclusions.
- Effective practice of sentence structures: simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences.
- Identification and accurate use of various clauses (noun, relative, and adverbial clauses).
- Correct application of key grammatical structures: gerunds, infinitives, “it/there” structures, and parallel structures.
- Proficient use of cohesive devices (conjunctions, transition phrases).
- Detection and correction of common grammar errors (uncountable nouns, parallelism, sentence fragments, misuse of conjunctions).
- Practice writing paragraphs for specific purposes: compare-contrast, cause-effect, and opinion/argumentative writing based on familiar topics (education, employment, health, environment, technology).

2. Writing Summer Hi-Intermediate (WRHI)

Core Content:
- Access to 15 advanced vocabulary topics (building on WRSI topics with greater depth).
- Mastery of 15 advanced grammar categories for Academic Writing.
- Use of advanced sentence structures (complex & compound-complex) and cohesive devices to express ideas effectively.
- Proficiency in advanced grammar concepts: noun clauses, participle clauses, and conditional sentences.
- Development of well-structured essays in various styles: argumentative, discussion, and cause & effect, with a focus on strong introductions, logical body paragraphs, and impactful conclusions.
- Avoiding common higher-level errors: run-on sentences, sentence fragments, and faulty modifiers.
- Intensive writing practice on diverse topics such as health, technology, media, education, and the environment.

3. Writing Summer Advance (WRSA)

Target Audience: For advanced students looking to perfect their writing skills, strengthen critical thinking, and fully master complex essay types in academic and international testing environments.
Learning Outcomes: Students will master advanced grammar and writing techniques, with the ability to analyze prompts, argue sharply, and express ideas with nuance. Expected level: equivalent to IELTS 6.5 – 7.0+. Master all 6 argumentative essay types commonly found in specialized exams and IELTS.
Core Content:
- Access to 12 of the most advanced and specialized vocabulary topics.
- Mastery of 12 advanced Writing grammar categories.
- Precise analysis of prompt requirements and selection of appropriate structures for each type: opinion, discussion, cause-effect, problem-solution, and two-part questions.
- Writing engaging introductions, logically developed body paragraphs with specific points and examples, and concise conclusions that clearly state a position.
- Proficient use of advanced argumentative structures: counterarguments and refutation, hypothetical conditionals, comparison-contrast, and cohesive devices.
- Avoiding and self-correcting subtle errors: vague examples, empty arguments, logical gaps, and non-academic vocabulary.
- Applying effective paraphrasing skills to increase flexibility and avoid repetition.
