IELTS on Computer Guide: The New Standard Format for 2025

1. Why the full transition to computer-delivered IELTS?

The shift away from paper-based testing to a standardized computer-delivered format is an inevitable trend, driven by several key factors:

• Modernization & Standardization: Aligning the IELTS exam in Vietnam with international standards, ensuring a consistent global assessment process, and providing a modern, digital-age testing experience.
• Increased Flexibility: Computer-delivered test schedules are much more frequent (often daily, with multiple sessions per day), allowing candidates to choose a time that best fits their personal schedule.
• Optimized Turnaround: Results are released quickly, typically within 3 to 5 days (sometimes as fast as 2–5 days), helping candidates meet deadlines for study abroad, job applications, or immigration.
• Enhanced Accuracy & Risk Mitigation: The standardized computer-based process minimizes potential errors in test administration, supervision, and grading compared to manual paper-based methods.
• User-Friendly Experience: An intuitive interface with helpful tools like highlighting, note-taking, automatic word counts, and easy editing for the Writing section makes the test more convenient for tech-savvy candidates.
• Environmental Sustainability: Eliminating paper tests significantly reduces waste, conserves resources, and supports environmental protection.

(The transition period prior to March 30, 2025, was supported by IDP and the British Council through free transfer policies or fee refunds for candidates who had already registered for paper-based tests.)

2. Understanding the computer-delivered IELTS format

Despite the shift to computers, the core essence of the IELTS exam remains unchanged:

• 4-Skill Structure: The test still comprehensively assesses all four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
• Content & Difficulty: The knowledge content, question types, section structures, and overall difficulty level remain exactly the same as before. The assessment standards and the 0–9 scoring scale are unchanged.
• Total Test Time: Approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes for the Listening, Reading, and Writing sections (excluding breaks and administrative procedures).

Listening

• Interface & Equipment: You will listen to questions via high-quality noise-canceling headphones and read/input your answers directly on the computer screen.
• Inputting Answers: Type directly into the blanks, select from dropdown menus, or drag and drop your choices.
• Tools: Use your mouse to highlight keywords, use the “Notes” function for quick jottings, or Copy/Paste if needed.
• Scratch Paper: You are still provided with scratch paper and a pencil/pen for notes during the listening process.
• Review Time: Important note: you only have 2 minutes at the end of the test to review all your answers.

Reading

• Interface: The screen is typically split: the reading passage on the left and questions on the right, which can be scrolled independently for easy cross-referencing.
• Inputting Answers: Type, select, or drag-and-drop (especially convenient for Matching tasks). You answer directly on the screen; no separate answer sheet is required.
• Tools: Highlight, Notes, Copy/Paste, and adjustable font size for better readability.

Writing

• Operation: Type your Task 1 and Task 2 responses using the keyboard.
• Tools:

– Automatic Word Count: Easily track the length of your writing.
– On-screen Timer: Clearly displayed, with color-coded warnings as time runs out.

• Format: This section is NOT conducted on a computer. You will still have a 1-on-1, face-to-face interview with an IELTS examiner in a private room.

4. IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR): A golden opportunity to improve your score

With CD IELTS as the standard, the OSR feature is more important than ever:

• What is OSR? It allows you to retake ONE single IELTS skill (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking) if you are unsatisfied with your score from a previous full test.
• Who is eligible? Any candidate who has completed a full 4-skill computer-delivered IELTS test.
• When? You must register for OSR within 60 days of your original test date.
• How does it work? You only retake the chosen skill. Your new result will be issued on a new Test Report Form (TRF), along with the scores from the other three skills from your original test. Your original TRF remains valid.

Enhance your computer skills:

• Typing: Practice 10-finger touch typing to improve speed and accuracy. The goal is to type fast enough to avoid time pressure during the Writing section.
• Mouse usage: Become proficient with basic actions like clicking, dragging-and-dropping, and scrolling.

Get fully acquainted with the interface:

• Most importantly: Visit the IDP and British Council websites to access free familiarization/practice tests specifically for the computer-delivered format. This is the best way to understand the interface, function buttons, and data entry.
• Some centers may offer short orientation sessions before the test date to help candidates get comfortable.

Develop a suitable test-taking strategy:

• Time management: Practice with the on-screen timer, allocating time wisely for each section and question.
• Master the tools: Practice using Highlight, Notes, and Copy/Paste effectively during your study sessions.
• Listening focus: Train your ability to listen and finalize answers quickly, as you only have 2 minutes of review time at the end.
• Reading strategy: Get used to reading on a split screen, and practice skimming/scanning and cross-referencing information.
• Writing on computer: Build endurance for typing long essays and practice proofreading for spelling/grammar errors (avoid relying on spell-check tools during practice).

6. Detailed test day guide

• Before test day: Double-check your test location, time, and required identification documents. Get a good night’s sleep.
• Arrival: Arrive at least 30–45 minutes before your official test time.
• Check-in: Present the original ID card or passport you used to register for the test. You will have your photo taken, fingerprints scanned, and personal belongings stored in lockers.
• Permitted items: Only your ID and a clear, label-free water bottle (per center regulations). Scratch paper and pencils/pens will be provided in the test room.
• Prohibited items: Mobile phones, smartwatches, pagers, other electronic devices, bags, study materials, food, etc. All personal items must be left outside the test room in a secure area or locker. Bringing a phone or electronic device into the test room will result in your test being disqualified.
• In the test room: Follow the invigilator’s instructions and check your equipment (computer, headphones, keyboard, mouse) before starting. If you encounter technical issues, raise your hand immediately. Stay quiet and focused.
• Special notes:
  • Restroom breaks are not permitted during the test.
  • In the event of a power outage, computers are equipped with Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) to maintain operation for several minutes, and the center’s backup generators will activate to ensure the test is not interrupted.
• Speaking: Usually takes place on the afternoon of the same day (or vice versa, depending on the schedule). The Speaking test process is the same as the paper-based format.
