Have you ever felt “stuck” or ran out of ideas when encountering the Architecture topic in IELTS Writing Task 2? Many candidates mistakenly believe that writing about this topic requires the professional knowledge of an architect. In reality, that is not the case! Examiners do not grade your design skills; they care about how you perceive the relationship between urban development and cultural preservation.

If you are struggling to decide whether to support modern skyscrapers or protect historic traditional houses, the following guide from Mr. Nam Viet (an 8.0 IELTS teacher at ECE) will provide you with valuable insights.

Overview of the Architecture Topic in IELTS Writing Task 2

In IELTS Writing Task 2, Architecture usually falls under broader topics: Urbanization, Culture & Society. The essence of the questions typically revolves around conflicting interests:

  • Preservation vs. Development: Should ancient architecture be preserved or demolished to build new structures?
  • Government vs. Private Sector: Who is responsible for protecting heritage?
  • Aesthetics vs. Functionality: Does modern architecture diminish cultural identity?
  • Environment: The link between architecture and sustainable development.

Common question types:

Essay Type Example Question
Opinion Essay Modern buildings are replacing traditional ones. Is this a positive or negative development?
Discussion Essay Some say traditional buildings should be preserved; others prefer modern architecture. Discuss both views.
Advantages / Disadvantages What are the advantages and disadvantages of modern architecture?
Problem / Solution Historical buildings are being destroyed. What problems does this cause and how can they be solved?

Negative Views / Reasons for Preserving Traditional Architecture

To write an insightful essay, you need to prepare arguments for both sides. Below is a collection of ideas (Brainstorming) from Mr. Nam Viet:

In Favor of Modern Architecture

Why do we need new buildings?

1. Meeting the needs of urbanization: Optimizing living space in densely populated cities, helping urban development take place rapidly.

2. Technology and Environment: New buildings often incorporate sustainable design and are energy-efficient buildings, helping to reduce adverse environmental impacts.

3. Creative freedom: Encouraging architectural innovation to reflect the lifestyle and technology of the modern era.

Protecting Traditional Architecture

Why must we preserve the old?

1. Preserving culture & history: These structures embody cultural heritage and historical value.

2. Community identity: Helping residents maintain a sense of identity, preventing all cities from looking identical (homogenization).

3. Tourism economy: Ancient architecture acts as a magnet for tourists, generating sustainable revenue for the local community.

Analysis of a Sample Discussion Essay

Prompt:

Some people think that modern buildings should replace old ones in cities, while others believe that traditional buildings should be preserved. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Sample Essay:

Modern cities are constantly changing, and many people argue that modern architecture should replace old structures to support progress, while others believe that preserving traditional architecture is essential for cultural reasons. This essay will discuss both views and explain why a balanced approach is the most effective solution.

On the one hand, supporters of modern buildings believe they are necessary for rapid urban development. Contemporary designs allow cities to accommodate growing populations and improve living standards. In addition, many new constructions focus on sustainable design, incorporating green spaces and advanced technology. As a result, energy-efficient buildings can reduce environmental damage while offering greater comfort and functionality.

On the other hand, opponents argue that replacing old buildings leads to the destruction of cultural heritage and historical value. Traditional structures often represent a nation’s history and provide residents with a strong sense of identity. Moreover, preserving historical areas can boost tourism and prevent the loss of cultural identity, which is becoming increasingly common in globalized cities.

In my opinion, cities should not choose between old and new architecture. Instead, governments should encourage architectural innovation that respects the past while meeting modern needs. By combining traditional elements with contemporary design, cities can protect their heritage and still develop sustainably.
