In the IELTS Speaking test, Daily Routine is a familiar topic. It often appears right in Part 1 as a warm-up, or it can become the main focus of your long turn in Part 2.
Many candidates underestimate this topic, leading to a dull, list-like response: “I wake up, I brush my teeth, I go to school…”. To hit Band 7.0 – 8.0+, you need to turn these mundane activities into an opportunity to showcase vocabulary related to time management and lifestyle.
Today, Mr. Dinh Nguyen – an 8.5 IELTS instructor at ECE – will share a collection of vocabulary and detailed sample answers to help you “level up” your responses for this topic.

IELTS Speaking Part 1 Sample: Daily Routine
Strategy: Answer directly and concisely, but always expand with a reason or a personal feeling.
Q1: What do you usually do in the morning?
I usually start my day by checking my phone briefly and then having breakfast. After that, I get ready for work and try to leave the house early to avoid traffic. A simple morning routine like this helps me feel more organised.
Q2: Do you prefer a busy or a relaxed daily routine?
I prefer a fairly balanced routine. While I do have a busy schedule during the day, I try to make time for rest in the evening. Maintaining a good work-life balance is quite important to me.
Q3: Has your daily routine changed recently?
Yes, it has changed a bit. Recently, I’ve been paying more attention to time management, so I wake up earlier and try to be more productive instead of wasting time on social media.
IELTS Speaking Part 2 Sample: Daily Routine
Topic:
Describe your daily routine.
You should say:
- what you usually do during the day
- how long you’ve followed this routine
- what you like or dislike about it
- and explain how it affects your life
Sample Answer:
I’d like to describe my daily routine, which I’ve been following for quite a long time, probably for the past few years.
On a typical weekday, I usually start my day fairly early. After waking up, I spend a few minutes checking my phone and then have breakfast. I find that having a simple but consistent morning routine helps me feel more organised and ready for the day. After that, I get dressed and head to work.
During the day, most of my time is spent working, so my schedule can be quite busy. I usually have a short lunch break, during which I try to relax a bit or chat with my colleagues. In the afternoon, I continue working until the end of the day, and I often feel quite tired by then.
In the evening, my routine is more relaxed. I usually have dinner with my family, do some light household chores, and then spend some free time watching videos or listening to music. Before going to bed, I try to plan what I need to do the next day, which helps with time management.
One thing I enjoy about my daily routine is that it gives my life a clear structure and helps me stay productive. However, one drawback is that I don’t always have much free time, especially on weekdays. Overall, I think this routine has a positive effect on my life because it helps me maintain a better work-life balance and reduces unnecessary stress.
IELTS Speaking Part 3: Daily Routine & Modern Life
This is where you need to broaden the discussion to include social and psychological perspectives.
Q1: Why do some people prefer a fixed daily routine?
In my opinion, a fixed daily routine helps people feel more in control of their time. It improves productivity and reduces stress because they know exactly what they need to do each day.
Q2: Do you think modern life makes people busier than in the past?
Yes, to a certain extent. Modern life comes with more responsibilities and distractions, especially due to technology. As a result, many people have a much busier schedule and less free time than before.
Q3: Is it important for people to change their daily habits?
I strongly believe that it is important. Changing unhealthy daily habits can improve both physical and mental well-being. For example, making time for exercise or relaxation can help people achieve better work-life balance.
Advice from Mr. Dinh Nguyen
The secret to a high score on this topic is using chronological order and maintaining coherence. Don’t just list isolated actions. Use transition words like After that, During the day, In the evening to keep your speech flowing. At the same time, emphasize your personal feelings (feeling more productive, feeling more balanced) to add depth to your answer. Good luck with your practice!
