IELTS Speaking Part 1 Sample Answers for the Topic of Decision Making

In Part 1, show naturalness by sharing your actual habits when facing choices.

Question 1: Do you find it easy or difficult to make decisions? Why?

“To be honest, I wouldn’t describe myself as a very decisive person. I would blame it on the fact that I have a habit of analyzing everything carefully, which can be useful at first. However, it also makes me worry too much about the possible consequences. As a result, I often put off making decisions, or sometimes I just leave them to someone else.”

Question 2: How do you usually make decisions in your daily life?

“As an adult, I have to take responsibility for most things on my own now. At first, I have to admit that this was not easy, and it was even a little scary. Over time, I have become more cautious when making decisions because I know that every action, even a small one, can have consequences. So in my daily life, I usually think carefully about the possible outcomes before making up my mind.”

Question 3: Are you the kind of person who makes decisions quickly, or do you take your time?

“Some of my past experiences have taught me that whenever I act impulsively, I often end up making the wrong decision. So now, I usually take a step back before making an important decision and carefully weigh the pros and cons. I sometimes even write them down on paper so that the information becomes more visual and organized.”

IELTS Speaking Part 2 Sample Answer: Decision Making Topic

Topic: Describe a good decision you made recently.

You should say:

  • What the decision was

  • When you made it

  • How you made the decision

  • And explain why you think it was a good decision.

Sample Answer:

Recently, I made a decision that was quite difficult at first, but later I was really grateful that I made it.

To give you some context, I’m a teacher, and a while ago, I decided to take a teaching skills course to improve my professional knowledge. At first, it wasn’t an easy decision because the course was quite costly and time-consuming. It lasted for more than a month, and the schedule was quite intensive, so I knew it would interrupt my already packed routine. I could imagine myself having to squeeze every minute out of my day to balance work and study, and actually, that was exactly what happened.

However, despite all those difficulties, I still decided to take the course because I had a clear purpose. I wanted to gain more practical knowledge and teaching techniques to improve my lessons. Also, the certificate would be a useful addition to my CV.

Luckily, the course turned out to be worth it. The skills I learned were extremely practical, and I could apply some of them immediately in my own classes. On top of that, the trainers and other teachers were very supportive, so I learned a lot from them as well.

That one and a half months was definitely challenging. There were nights when I had to stay up late to prepare my demo lessons, but overall, it was a memorable and rewarding experience. The biggest lesson I learned is that sometimes, choosing the difficult path can bring the most valuable results.

IELTS Speaking Part 3 Sample Answer: Decision Making Topic

In Part 3, the topic of Decision Making is expanded into broader social issues such as career orientation, marriage, and cultural differences.

Question 1: What kinds of decisions are usually difficult to make?

“I think career and relationship-related decisions are among the hardest ones to make. Career choices are obviously very important, but relationship decisions can also have a lifelong impact. For example, if you marry someone without carefully considering whether your values and lifestyles match, you may end up spending your life with someone who is not truly compatible with you. And once that happens, the emotional and financial cost of reversing that decision can be very high.”

Question 2: How important are career-related decisions?

“Decisions related to career are crucial. They can affect one’s financial stability and the level of job satisfaction. That’s why individuals, especially young people, should carefully consider different factors when making such a decision. Career guidance programs can be very useful because they give young people advice and direction when they feel unsure about their future career path.”

Question 3: How important is it to get advice before making a big decision?

“Seeking advice is very important before making a major decision, especially advice from people with experience. Their perspectives can help you make a more informed decision. Also, valuable insights are not always easy to find on the Internet, so you sometimes have to actively look for them by talking to the right people.”

Question 4: Are there cultural differences in the way people make decisions?

“Definitely. I think it is easy to point out the difference in how people from the northern and southern parts of my country make decisions. People in the north tend to be more careful, especially when it comes to financial decisions. Meanwhile, people from the south seem to be more open to taking risks and making decisions more quickly.”

In short, Decision Making is not simply a topic to test language proficiency, but also a measure of logical thinking and maturity in how you perceive issues. To achieve a high score, the difference lies not in cramming overly advanced vocabulary, but in the ability to present your reasoning process in a structured, objective, and well-founded manner. Apply these expressive structures flexibly to cultivate a sharp analytical habit, thereby confidently mastering any situation in the exam room.
