IELTS Speaking Part 2 Sample: Describe your hometown
Topic: Describe your hometown or the place where you grew up. You should say:
- Where it is
- What it is like
- What people do there
- And explain why you like or dislike it.
Sample Answer (Band 8.0+):
I’d like to talk about Hanoi, which is the city where I spent most of my childhood and teenage years.
Hanoi is located in the north of Vietnam and is one of the oldest cities in the country. It’s a fascinating mix of ancient architecture and modern buildings. You can see traditional houses, old temples and busy shopping malls all in the same area.
People in my hometown are usually hardworking and friendly. Many work in offices, run small family businesses, or sell food on the streets. Life there is quite fast-paced, especially in the city center, where everything seems to be moving non-stop.
Although Hanoi can be crowded and noisy, I still love it deeply because it holds so many precious memories for me. The familiar streets, the seasonal changes, and the local food all give me a strong sense of belonging. No matter where I go in the future, it will always feel like home.
IELTS Speaking Part 3 Sample: Hometown & Society
This is the part for you to demonstrate social thinking and your ability to compare and evaluate.
Q1: Why do people often feel attached to their hometown?
Answer: “I think it’s mainly because that’s where their childhood memories are formed. People grow up there, build relationships, and experience important moments of their lives. All of these create an emotional bond that is very hard to replace.”
Q2: Do you think people prefer living in cities or in the countryside nowadays?
Answer: “It depends on their priorities. Many young people are drawn to cities because of better job opportunities and modern lifestyles. On the other hand, older people or families often prefer the countryside for its peaceful environment and lower living costs.”
Q3: How are hometowns changing in recent years?
Answer: “Most hometowns are becoming more developed due to urbanization. There are better roads, modern buildings and improved public services. However, this also leads to problems like pollution and the loss of traditional culture, which is quite concerning.”
The Hometown topic is a golden opportunity for you to make a great first impression on the examiner. Do not just describe it like a dry geographical map. Weave in emotions and use valuable adjectives such as picturesque, bustling or close-knit community to paint a vivid picture of your birthplace.
