How many ways are there to register for the IELTS exam?

Currently, candidates can register for the exam through three main methods. Each method has its own requirements to help the registration process go smoothly:
Method 1: Registering in person at an IDP or British Council office
Candidates can go directly to the official offices of IDP or British Council in Vietnam to complete the exam registration procedure. To register, you need to bring the original copy of your identity document (identity card, citizen identification card, or passport) for verification. Here, staff will guide you to fill out the registration form and complete the necessary steps. This method is suitable for candidates who want to directly receive support and have their questions about the exam answered.
Advantages:
- Direct consultation: When coming to the office, you will be guided by staff and have all your questions related to the exam, fees, and latest regulations answered.
- Instant information verification: Your documents and personal information will be verified directly on the spot, helping to minimize the risk of errors.
- Reliable: Registering in person ensures that you do not encounter unofficial websites or units, limiting the risk of fraud.
Disadvantages:
- Loss of time and travel effort: You need to visit the office during office hours, which can be inconvenient if you live far away or have a busy schedule.
- Limited locations: In Vietnam, IDP and British Council offices are mainly concentrated in major cities, so candidates in other areas may face difficulties if they want to register in person.
Method 2: Registering online via the IDP or British Council website
To save time, you can register for the exam online through the website of IDP or British Council. This process includes:
- Accessing the official website, choosing the test type (Academic or General Training), test format (paper-based or computer-delivered), and selecting a suitable test date.
- Providing necessary personal information and uploading a scanned copy of your identity document.
- Completing the exam fee payment through accepted online payment methods.
- After completion, you will receive a registration confirmation email and detailed information about your test date. This method is convenient and time-saving, especially since you can easily choose a suitable test schedule.
Advantages:
- Convenient and fast: You can register anytime and from anywhere without having to visit an office. This method also allows for easy checking of test schedules, location selection, and online payment.
- Easy information management: After registration, you will receive a confirmation email and can review your information on your online account.
- Time flexibility: Suitable for busy people, especially those who need to choose a suitable test schedule within a short time.
Disadvantages:
- Online operation skills required: For those unfamiliar with technology or online payments, this method can pose difficulties.
- Risk of information errors: Filling in information and uploading documents to the system yourself can cause errors, affecting the exam and subsequent verification process.
- Dependency on online payment: If you encounter issues with your payment card or banking system, the registration process may be interrupted.
Method 3: Registering through official partners of IDP and British Council

In addition to the main offices, IDP and British Council also have a network of partners in many provinces and cities, making it more convenient for candidates to register without having to visit the central office. When registering through partners, you also need to bring the original copy of your identity document to complete the procedure.
Advantages:
- Flexible locations: Official partners of IDP and British Council are present in many provinces and cities, making it more convenient for you to register if you are not close to the central office.
- Direct guidance: Partners often provide support services and guidance for candidates, similar to registering at the central office.
- Reduced difficulties in online registration: You can register through a partner unit without having to worry about online registration steps or online payments.
Disadvantages:
- Need to check for reputable partners: You need to ensure that the registration location is an official partner of IDP or British Council to avoid the risk of scams or fraud.

- Different procedures: Some partners may have slightly different registration requirements or procedures compared to the central office, and they may also apply additional fees for support services.
Regulations to know when registering for the IELTS exam
- Registration dossier and ID: To complete exam registration, you need a valid identity document, such as a passport or citizen identification card, with a clear photo and unexpired validity. You must bring this document on the test day for identity verification. If you need to change the type of document used for registration, you must notify the test organization center at least one week before the test date.
- Age: People under 18 years old need to provide a consent letter from a parent or legal guardian to be eligible to register for the exam.
- Test format selection: IELTS has two test formats: paper-based and computer-delivered, applicable to both Academic and General Training test modules. Choosing the test format depends on the test schedule of each location, and you can check on the IDP or British Council registration system for details.
- Test locations and schedules: Paper-based IELTS tests are usually organized 3 to 4 times a month in major cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang. Computer-delivered tests can take place up to 6 days a week with multiple test shifts per day. Specific test schedules will be updated on the organizers’ websites.
How long before the test date should you register for IELTS?
You should submit your application as early as possible because test spots are often limited and fill up quickly, especially during peak months (usually from March to June and from September to December). The recommended registration time is as follows:
- Paper-based IELTS: For paper-based tests, you should register at least 1 to 2 months in advance. Paper-based tests have fewer spots and are not as flexible as computer-delivered tests, so during peak seasons or at large test centers, it is quite common for spots to fill up. Registering early will help ensure the test date fits your study and work schedule.
- Computer-delivered IELTS: If you choose the computer-delivered format, you can register later than for the paper-based test. This format is usually held multiple times a week, sometimes even daily in major cities. However, to ensure you have enough preparation time and can choose a suitable test time, registering at least 1–2 weeks in advance is still a safe option.
- IELTS UKVI and IELTS Life Skills: Tests specifically for visas or life skills also have more limited schedules and usually require an earlier registration process, at least 1 month before the desired test date.
Additional note: You can check the available test schedule and the number of remaining spots through the official registration websites of IDP or the British Council for the most up-to-date information on test sessions. Registering early also helps you avoid the risk of paying extra fees for changing your test date if there is a last-minute change in your schedule.

What to Do to Cancel Your IELTS Registration?
Canceling a test registration can happen for many reasons such as changes in plans, unsuitable schedules, or health issues. To cancel your test registration, you need to follow these steps:
1. Determine the Cancellation Request Timeline
When canceling your test registration, the time at which you submit the cancellation request will affect whether you receive a partial refund of the test fee. Common regulations for cancellation are usually:
- Canceling at least 5 weeks (35 days) before the test date: If you request cancellation at least 5 weeks before your registered test date, you will usually receive a major portion of the test fee back, though a small administrative fee may apply.
- Canceling within 5 weeks of the test date: Most test centers will not refund the test fee in the case of such late cancellation, unless you have exceptional circumstances (such as a serious medical issue).
2. Prepare the Required Documents
If the reason for cancellation is due to medical issues or emergencies, you need to prepare the relevant supporting documents:
- Hospital confirmation / Medical certificate: If you are unable to sit the test due to health problems, prepare a medical certificate from a hospital. Typically, this certificate must clearly state your medical condition, bear the hospital’s stamp, and be issued close to the test date.
- Other documents (if needed): In case of cancellation due to other emergency reasons (such as accidents or family emergencies), contact the test center regarding the specific documents required.
3. Contact the Test Center
You must send your cancellation request to the center where you previously registered for the test. Please note the following steps:
- Send an Email or Cancellation Request Form: Contact the IELTS test center (British Council or IDP) where you registered via email. In the email, you must provide the following information:
- Full name.
- ID card or passport number used during registration.
- Registered test date.
- Reason for cancellation along with supporting documents (if any).
- Response Time: After submitting the request, you will receive a confirmation email from the center acknowledging receipt of your cancellation request. Processing usually takes from 3–7 working days.
4. Check Refund Policies
The refund policy will depend on the time you cancel and your reason for cancellation:
- Cancellation before 5 weeks: You may receive a refund of approximately 75% to 100% of the test fee, after deducting administrative fees. This administrative fee will vary depending on the test center.
- Cancellation within 5 weeks: You will not receive a refund, except in exceptional circumstances such as the health reasons mentioned above.
Important Note: If your refund is approved, the money will be refunded via the payment method you used when registering. The refund process usually takes 7–14 working days depending on the bank.
5. Reschedule the Test Date If You Cannot Cancel
If you do not want to cancel completely, some centers allow you to transfer your test date under specific conditions:
- Transferring the test date at least 5 weeks prior: If you request a test date transfer at least 5 weeks in advance, you can transfer to another test date without paying an additional fee.
- Transferring the test date within 5 weeks: Usually, centers will charge a transfer fee if this request is made close to the test date. The fee may range from 20% to 25% of the test fee.
To request a test date change, contact the test center and follow their specific instructions. Note that the new test date must be within 3 months of the original registered test date.
6. Receive Confirmation from the Center After Cancellation
Once your cancellation request is approved, the test center will send a confirmation via email. Please check the following details in the email:
- Confirmation of successful cancellation: The email will confirm that you have officially canceled the test and are not required to attend the registered test session.
- Refund details (if applicable): The email will clearly state the refund amount and the expected refund timeline.
