For many test-takers, IELTS Writing is considered the most “daunting” of the four skills. It requires a significant time investment and a solid strategy, along with the right study methods from the very beginning.
Understanding the importance of establishing a strong study foundation early on, Ms. Doan Nuong, Director of ECE Language Center, shared her valuable insights at the seminar “IELTS Writing Strategies,” held on the morning of December 18, 2023, at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam. The event was a great success, drawing significant interest from students both within and outside the academy, particularly those majoring in English Language.
During the seminar, Ms. Nuong provided detailed guidance on the preparation process and specific strategies for both parts of the Writing test, including:
For Writing Task 1:
- Analyze the prompt.
- Paraphrase the introduction based on the prompt.
- Identify key features of the chart, such as trends, changes, etc.
- Provide a general overview of the chart.
- Select relevant data to analyze.
- Determine the logical order for describing the data.
- Use the selected data to draft the body paragraphs.
- (If time permits) Write a concluding sentence.
- Review and proofread your work before finishing.
For Writing Task 2:
- Analyze the prompt.
- Brainstorm arguments related to the given topic.
- Select 3-4 main points for analysis.
- Write the introduction.
- Develop the selected points into complete, coherent paragraphs.
- Write a conclusion that summarizes the main arguments and your position.
- Review and proofread your work before finishing.
For both tasks, Ms. Nuong incorporated practical examples for hands-on practice, as well as solutions for common mistakes and tips on effective time management during preparation. At the end of the session, students had the opportunity to ask questions about the IELTS exam, which Ms. Nuong addressed in detail.
