IELTS Speaking Part 1 Sample: Patience

In Part 1, try to personalize your answers. Examiners highly value honesty and your ability to describe your habits naturally.

Question 1: Are you a patient person?

“I’d say I’m fairly patient, although it really depends on the situation. I don’t mind waiting if I know something is worth it, but I can get a bit impatient when people are constantly running late or when things don’t go according to plan. Over the years, though, I’ve learned to be more patient and not get worked up over small things.”

Question 2: Do you like waiting?

“Not really, if I’m being honest. Nobody enjoys waiting, especially when they don’t know how long it’ll take. That said, if it’s something I’m genuinely looking forward to, I don’t mind waiting because I know it’ll be worth the wait in the end.”

Question 3: What do you do while waiting?

“It depends on where I am. If I’m at home, I usually keep myself occupied by watching videos or listening to music. If I’m outside, I might scroll through social media or reply to messages just to pass the time. I don’t like simply sitting around doing nothing.”

Question 4: Did you have more patience when you were younger?

“Actually, I think it’s the other way around. When I was younger, I wanted everything right away and found it hard to wait. As I’ve grown older, I’ve realized that some things simply take time, so I’ve become much more patient than I used to be.”

IELTS Speaking Part 2 Sample: Topic: Patience

Topic: Describe an occasion when you waited a long time for a nice thing.

You should say:

  • What it was

  • How long you waited

  • Why you had to wait

  • And explain how you felt about it.

Sample Answer:

I’d like to talk about the time I waited for my first laptop, which was probably one of the things I looked forward to the most.

This happened when I was in high school. At that time, I really wanted a laptop because I needed one for studying and, to be honest, I also wanted to play games and watch movies on it. However, my parents thought I was still too young to have one, so they asked me to wait until I had achieved good academic results.

As a result, I ended up waiting for almost a whole year. During that time, I kept counting down the days and imagining what it would be like to finally get my hands on it. There were moments when I ran out of patience because many of my friends already had their own laptops, but I knew my parents had their reasons.

Eventually, after I had done well in my exams, my parents bought me one as a reward. I was absolutely over the moon. Looking back, I think the long wait actually made me appreciate it much more. If I had gotten it right away, I probably would have taken it for granted. So, although the wait felt like forever at the time, it was definitely worth the wait.

Storytelling Technique Analysis:

Ms. Nhan’s response follows a very tight and persuasive emotional arc:

  • Context (Reason for waiting): A practical need hindered by parental requirements (achieving good grades).

  • Emotional progression (The struggle): The impatience of counting down the days, occasionally running out of patience due to peer pressure.

  • Result (Emotional payoff): Feeling over the moon upon achieving the goal.

  • Deep reflection: Waiting fosters appreciation. If obtained too easily, we tend to take it for granted.

IELTS Speaking Part 3 Sample: Topic: Patience

In Part 3, patience is no longer just a personal matter but becomes a cultural issue and a reflection of societal evolution.

Question 1: Why are some people more patient than others?

“I think personality plays a big role. Some people are naturally calm and don’t mind waiting, whereas others prefer immediate results and get frustrated easily. Upbringing also matters because people who are taught to be patient from a young age tend to develop that habit over time. On top of that, life experiences can gradually teach people to deal with delays and setbacks better.”

Question 2: Do people nowadays have less patience than in the past?

“Yes, I think so. We live in such a fast-paced world that people have become used to getting things instantly, whether it’s food delivery, online shopping, or entertainment. As a result, many people expect instant gratification and find it difficult to wait. Social media and technology have also shortened our attention spans, which makes us even less willing to be patient.”

Question 3: Is waiting always a bad thing?

“Not necessarily. Sometimes waiting can actually make people value things more because they have invested time and effort into getting them. It can also teach people patience and self-discipline, which are important qualities in life. Personally, I think some of the most rewarding experiences are the ones that require time and patience rather than instant gratification.”

“In summary, the topic of Patience is not just about recounting a boring waiting experience; it is actually a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate emotional maturity and deep insight into modern life. Instead of just complaining about wasting time, skillfully using terms like instant gratification or affirming the value of something being worth the wait will help your speech reach a higher level of critical thinking.

Apply Ms. Nhan’s vocabulary system and outlines to your daily practice to transform personal stories into natural and persuasive answers. Good luck with your exam preparation and achieving your goals with ECE!”
